Luke~8:22-39

What amazing stories of Jesus! He stops the storm by speaking to it. He just tells it off and it steps back into line. Brilliant! The disciples didn’t understand by this point who Jesus was (v25) and they didn’t have faith. To be fair to them, this is the first “macro-miracle” recorded in Luke and they didn’t understand that Jesus was God, so you can see why they wouldn’t assume he had the power to save them from the storm. I, on the other hand, have no excuse! I know what Jesus is and that he has complete control over everything – and I’ve seen him exercise that power in events around me. And yet when something looks like it’s not going to work I can so easily doubt that he can fix it.

The really striking thing about the healing of the demon possesed man, is Jesus’ mercy on the demon. (This is, of course, after the fact that though there are many demons inside the man and they are very powerful, they are absolutely terrified of Jesus.) He grants their request to be sent into a herd of pigs. Isn’t that cool?

Heavenly Father, I praise you for your great mercy. I praise you for your immense power over natural and supernatural forces. Don’t let me forget it! Amen.
